Celebrating the end of the election campaign last night with fellow Green candidates in the national capital region. As the results started to come in, we paid attention to how Canada voted. It was great to be out, sharing stories, and analyzing together! I voted 🗳️ I won’t tell you for whom. Make sure to get out today if you haven’t already! I am grateful for the opportunity to help promote the Green Party’s vision for a sustainable planet. I am also grateful at the opportunity to remind Canadians that sustainability is a larger concept. Our entire societal framework, including our economic model, needs to be sustainable. We need to ensure that the future generations not only inherit a habitable planet but also a country that is not just functioning but thriving! We do have high-tech know-how in this country. We have good quality education in [this] country, but we’ve lost a lot of our best and brightest to the U.S., unfortunately. So we need to stop the brain drain. We need to be self-sufficient in important things like food, medicine, and energy so that we cannot be bullied by foreign powers. In many regions, solar and wind are already cheaper than the alternatives, even when the cost of short-term storage is accounted for. So, while we continue research on safer nuclear alternatives, we can move ahead on renewable energy. Unfortunately, Canada chose not to be a leader in the advancement and manufacturing of renewable energy. This needs to change. We do have issues with not being able to build homes quickly enough. We have regulatory hurdles and we have policies that make a lot of mom-and-pop landlords not want to be landlords. We need to be building more homes at the end of the day. We need to make them more affordable and we have to incentivize people to have their own home to live in and disincentivize housing speculation aimed at accumulating rental properties. Federal money does need to go to municipalities for infrastructure projects... we can also use it as an opportunity to ensure that municipalities are building a city with public transportation in mind and that it’s not encouraging urban sprawl.
